Common Wedding Myths To Watch Out For

Common Wedding Myths Debunked

Bride and groom debunk wedding myths

Weddings have been around since the beginning of time across all cultures and this has allowed hundreds of traditions to flourish like having something old, new, borrowed, and blue on the day of your wedding. However, this has also allowed certain myths to stick around, despite being inaccurate or downright wrong.

Here are some of the most common wedding myths you need to watch out for when planning your wedding and on the day itself.

Myth #1 – You Have To Follow All Age-Old Traditions

Nope! Not even close. Today, you can incorporate age-old wedding traditions or skip them altogether.  The beauty of the history of weddings is that they are forever changing. While it is true that many couples feel the need to honor ancient wedding traditions, weddings in 2020 are all about being unique.

Many believe that couples need to follow them to have a successful marriage. We’re here to tell you, the myth of “having to” follow age-old traditions is false!

Your wedding should be personalized for you.

Combine wedding traditions with new trends and make it your own.

Myth #2 – Every Detail Has To Be Perfect

There’s huge pressure on the couple, especially the bride, to have the “perfect wedding” and have everything in order, down to the very last detail. This is because they have this belief that guests will notice if something’s out of place.

However, this is not the case most times so don’t worry too much and stress yourself out about having the perfect wedding.

After all, this is about your union with your future spouse, not how fresh your flowers look or text on the signage is not perfect.

Myth #3 – Your Wedding Has To Cost A Fortune

It’s no secret that weddings are an expensive event and many feel the pressure to make it as extravagant as possible. After all, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event and many believe that not spending a fortune means you don’t care enough about your wedding.

However, you have to remember that the wedding is only the beginning of your life together and so it might not be wise to spend your life’s savings on just the wedding. Figure out your priorities and this will guide you to make wise decisions for your wedding.

Better to have money for a down payment on a home than an extravagant wedding that lasts 5 hours.

Myth #4 –  Wedding Planners Cost Too Much

Not all wedding planners are as extravagant and expensive as what you see in the movies. There are tons of wedding planners out there in your local community that you can afford. Of course, there are also those that charge a hefty fee and you gotta be a Rockefeller to afford them, but yes! you too can have a wedding planner if you feel you need one.

But before you hire a wedding planner, consider this. Do you really need someone to help you through the entire process of planning your wedding or do you just need a “day of coordinator” to help keep the wedding day in check?

A day of coordinator will help with the timeline, managing your wedding vendors, and making sure everyone knows where they need to be.

A wedding planner will help with pretty much everything. From budgeting to picking out your dress, flowers, scheduling, timeline and any and everything in between. So if you are not fond of making decisions, a wedding planner might be right for you.

Rain on wedding day good luck

Myth #5 – Rain On Your Wedding Day

There is an old superstition that states “rain on your wedding day is good luck”. Huh? Good luck? I know for me rain on any day causes my hair to frizz and look a hot mess so how can it be good luck on my wedding day?

We wondered, where the heck did this superstition come from and what the heck does it really mean?

After a little research, we learned that in many cultures rain symbolizes unity, fertility, cleansing, tears, and renewal. If you break these down it really does seem like rain on your wedding day is a good thing.

Unity – think about a knot. When you join together as one at your wedding you are essentially “tieing the knot” of love. It is a super tight bond that is tied together in a way that makes it extremely difficult to undo. And when it gets wet (ie: when it rains) the knot is even impossible to break. Hmmm, it really is good luck.

Fertility – it is true, nothing lives or thrives without water. In order for any plant, tree, flower or family to bloom and multiply water is necessary. Having rain on your wedding day is good luck because it signifies life and the blessing of children.

Cleansing – rain cleanses all the dirt and grime away (especially pollen) so this part of the superstition symbolizes rain washing away tough times or sadness. A great way to start a new adventure together. Cleansed and free.

Tears – this represents the last tears you will shed during your marriage. (we pray this one is true!)

Renewal – rain always symbolizes a rebirth, a fresh start, new growth and opportunities to thrive. Think about nature and how important rain is for anything to survive. It should not be dreaded but embraced and loved. Without it nothing lives or thrives.
