Whisked Away For A Remote & Intimate Lesbian Elopement

‘Love isn’t just some special occasion. It’s in the air, it’s everywhere all the time, even when you’re not there,’ Katie had said to Mary on the day they had sat down to plan their wedding. The exorbitant cost, the endless array of dinner options, wedding dresses, and floral arrangements. It was tremendous stress, no wonder there were bridezilla memes! They talked about what they imagined their wedding to be and painstakingly went back and forth about whether it should be a glamorous, traditional wedding or a remote & intimate lesbian elopement.

‘Is this even really our style?’ Mary had remarked when their impromptu wedding planner (chosen from a list of word-of-mouth recommendations from their best friends) had laid out a folder of wedding styles. Katie and Mary- two peas in a pod, both wild, unpredictable, and carefree felt boxed in by societal expectations of a grand, perfect wedding in which every element was thoughtfully executed.

One night as the clock struck 12, Katie woke Mary up. ‘What is it, is everything okay??’

‘We need to leave,’ Said Katie trying to hide a half-jovial expression. ‘You said it yourself, this wedding we’re planning every day, it’s not our style, it isn’t who we are. Let’s elope. We’ll spend the night in a hotel and in the morning we can arrange for someone to marry us. The countryside shall be our venue and the wildflowers our floral décor. What do you say?’

The elopement was not planned (they rarely are) but it was beautiful but more than that it was fitting for the two individuals who had decided to spend their lives together. And that’s all a wedding and a union needed to be, right?

In the morning they both dressed in near-identical white lace dresses they had purchased a few months ago from a little vintage boutique. Katie did a simple low ponytail styled with some wildflowers, and Mary let her dark long hair just flow free in the wind with a plain straw cap to keep them in place. With the sunlight trickling in the meadow where they had spent so many fond afternoons picnicking, they did their vows and got married.

Such was their love and devotion for each other, they hadn’t even needed to do laborious brainstorming for writing vows. The words had flown freely, like extempore poetry. It was natural, organic, and more than anything else; it was real. Katie had doves tattooed on her wrist to signify her need to be free and they both decided to get matching tattoos for their wedding. ‘Haven’t you ever wanted to be free of me? Mary had asked. ‘Freedom means nothing without you, you give me the strength to be myself and to be true to myself every day.’ Katie had replied.

They styled their lace dresses with straw bags and picked flowers and enjoyed the day after the vows. Simple gold bands were exchanged and lots of words of love. The wedding had been on their own terms, just like everything else. Free from stress or electronic devices, it seemed a timeless affair, one that could be remembered fondly for many years to come.
